Hank Green, a YouTube veteran personality and co-host of the channel vlogbrothers with his elder brother and author John Green, recently shared with his three million subscribers that he has been diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma, a type of blood cancer. In the 13-minute video, Hank spoke candidly about his diagnosis and how he discovered it.
Although Hank was not looking forward to starting chemotherapy, which he called a “fairly unpleasant” treatment, he is grateful to have a strong support system around him. He added that this type of cancer is very responsive to treatment and the goal is a cure. He also mentioned that his friend went through the same condition and has been doing well.
During the video, the brothers began their conversation like they usually do. Hank shared his first thought when he learned about his diagnosis, which he called a “very Hank Green thought”, and John shared his own first thought, which his brother called “very John Green thought.”
Hank admitted that he was “wrestling with the reality” of being seen as someone struggling instead of a “goofy science guy.” He shared that this is now part of how people will imagine him, and it is an identity being thrust upon him. He believes he will get through it and remain positive throughout his treatment.
John Green, in a heartfelt comment, conveyed his love and support to his younger brother during this challenging time. He reassured Hank that they all love him and he will get through this.
This is a reminder that our loved ones need our support and love during difficult times, including a cancer diagnosis. John Green’s response is a model for all of us to follow when a loved one is going through a tough situation.
