According to Minister of State for Poverty Alleviation and Social Safety Faisal Karim Kundi, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan will soon apply for political asylum in the United States. Kundi, an office bearer of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), said during a press conference: “I am going to give you guys some news that I have received through my sources: Imran Khan will soon apply for political asylum in America.”
Imran Khan’s party has reportedly faced pressure from the state’s authorities after party workers allegedly destroyed military installations, including the General Headquarters in Rawalpindi, following Khan’s arrest on May 9. The army has dubbed the day as “Black Day”. Many party leaders and workers have been arrested in connection with the protests. Some party members, including Asad Umar, have resigned from their positions.
Several party leaders and lawmakers have also publicly denounced the attacks on state installations, and some have even left the party.
Several Pakistani officials have accused PTI of carrying out “coordinated” attacks on public properties and military installations, and the government has considered imposing a ban on the party.
Kundi claimed that Imran Khan has pending cases against him in America and Britain, which is why he is avoiding the UK and trying to seek asylum in the US.
