Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed his disapproval of the judiciary for showing favoritism towards Imran Khan in a reaction to the Supreme Court of Pakistan’s order for the release of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman. The Prime Minister stated that the judiciary had become an “iron shield” for Khan while also pointing out the divided nature of the judiciary.
Addressing the cabinet meeting in Islamabad, PM Shehbaz questioned the judiciary’s impartiality when it comes to handling cases of other politicians in Pakistan and whether they are granted the same treatment as Imran Khan.
These comments came after the Supreme Court Chief Justice, Umar Ata Bandial, ordered the release of the PTI chairman, terming his arrest on May 9 as “illegal.”
Imran Khan was arrested by Rangers personnel in the Al-Qadir Trust case from the Islamabad High Court (IHC) premises when acting on the National Accountability Bureau’s (NAB) warrant which attracted criticism for its bias against political opponents.
PM Shehbaz aired his concerns about other politicians who were sent to jail in the past under fake cases and whether the judiciary ever took corrective measures on a similar note. The premier also commented on the National Accountability Bureau’s (NAB) history of cases and criticized the anti-graft body of subjecting the country to a poisonous environment affecting various industries, educational establishments, and religious institutions.
