Renowned actor Robert De Niro did not hold back his thoughts on the former US President Donald Trump during a press conference for his upcoming movie Killers of the Flower Moon held at the Cannes Film Festival. The conference was held in an effort to promote the film, which focuses on the discovery of oil reserves on Osage Nation’s land in the 1920s, and the subsequent murders that took place.
While describing the complex character he plays in the movie, William Hale, De Niro highlighted the character’s sense of entitlement and lack of empathy towards the Osage people. He likened such people to the “banality of evil” and cautioned society against them. He then took a dig at Trump, not mentioning his name, but rather referring to him as “that guy” and calling him “stupid”.
De Niro expressed his astonishment that many people believed Trump could still do a good job, labeling such a notion as insane. He also said that even though his character had questionable morals, Hale was still smart in many ways, in contrast to Trump.
Overall, De Niro’s words encapsulated his views on ambiguous morality in society, and his distaste for Trump’s presidency.
