Instagram is reportedly testing a new text-based app to compete with Twitter, that will be introduced soon according to Bloomberg.

The app, which is being tested with celebrities and influencers, will function separately from Instagram but will give users the option to connect their accounts.

The project has been available to select creators for months, according to anonymous sources.

Based on a brief description provided by social marketing teacher Lia Haberman, the new app may be compatible with other Twitter competitors such as Mastodon.

Since Elon Musk made drastic changes to Twitter, including a paid subscription model, some users have been looking for alternative social media platforms.

Haberman speculates that Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, is seeking to create its version of an “everything app,” which would consolidate its many features and experiences to offer users a one-stop-shop social media experience.

The new app is expected to be launched by June of this year.
